30 March 2019, 18:00, ICA Cinema Dora García’s essayistic dialogue with critic and artist Oscar Masotta, known for introducing the work of Jacques Lacan to Argentina and Spain. As preparation for this screening, Dora García led a special reading session exploring texts related to Oscar Masotta, held at the Keynes Library, Birkbeck. Film: Second Time Around [Segunda Vez], Dora García, Belgium/Norway, 2018, DCP, 94 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles Spanish contemporary artist Dora García’s first feature-length film is an essayistic response to the work of Argentinian author, critic, artist and psychoanalyst Oscar Masotta (1930–1979). Second Time Around (Segunda Vez) (2018) echoes Masotta’s engagement with the concept of re-enactment through reconstructions of several of Masotta’s “happenings” alongside dramatised excerpts of contemporaneous writings by Macedonio Fernández and Julio Cortázar. Through these layered duplications and repetitions, the film creates a dialogue with Masotta’s work as it explores the intersection of art, politics and psychoanalysis. After the screening, Dora García was in conversation with Maria Palacios Cruz (LUX Artists Moving Image).
