Remembering nothing: Encoding and memory processes involved in representing empty locations, Memory & Cognition" Contents: Supplementary Materials (text), Experimental task (screen recordings), stimuli (images), data (.mat files), analysis scripts (Matlab and R scripts). The dataset consists of the eye-tracking data and reaction time/accuracy data collected in an experiment that addresses how empty locations are encoded and remembered as opposed to filled locations. On each experimental trial, participants saw a number of locations that they were instructed to track (4 or 8), and respond whether a change occurred at a tracked location (filled->empty/empty->filled) or not (filled->filled/empty->empty). Participants' gaze patterns and pupil dilation were measured during the encoding phase and reaction time and accuracy were measured at the outcome. An image sequence was presented on the screen incorporating the following phases: Tracked locations revealed/Tracked locations concealed/Outcome (change/no change). Participants' gaze data and pupil dilation was recorded throughout the experiment (Tobii TX300 using a chin rest) At the outcome, participants responded via key press whether the outcome of the trial constituted a change in the tracked locations or not. Participants were instructed to respond as quickly and accurately as possible. Response times and accuracy were recorded using Matlab. Custom scripts were used to clean the data in Matlab: linear interpolation, rejection of trials with insufficient data, rejecting participants not above chance, etc. Subsequently, custom scripts were built in R for statistical analysis: permutation analysis to assess changes in pupil dilation, mixed models to analyse gaze patterns (gaze direction predicts accuracy or not).
