[EFF19S2] Session 2: Fausto, Andrea Bussmann
Description
A double-bill about the histories and mysteries of place, introduced by Catherine Grant, Birkbeck
Films: Fausto, Andrea Bussmann, Mexico/Canada, 2018, DCP, 70 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles
This enthralling ethnographic essay film explores local stories and myths in Oaxaca, Mexico, connecting with wider themes of technology, perception and the self.
The first solo feature from Canadian director Andrea Bussmann, Fausto is an enigmatic portrait of Mexico’s Oaxacan coast and its inhabitants. Taking the legend of Faust as its starting point, this ethnographic study interweaves Goethe’s narrative with local myths and stories to consider the impact of colonialism on the region.
before my eyes [ante mis ojos], Lina Rodriguez, Colombia/Canada, 2018, digital, 7 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles
Shot on grainy, amber-like Super 8, Lina Rodriguez’s elusive and evocative before my eyes [ante mis ojos] offers a fragmentary glimpse of Colombia’s mythic Lake Guatavita, long considered the inspiration for the legend of El Dorado.
